Born in the Navy SEALs
Fitness Anywhere LLC owes its roots and ongoing drive to the US Navy SEAL Teams — the world’s finest commandos who are professional athletes of the most serious kind. Development of the TRX® Suspension Trainer® began among these ranks as an invention of necessity. In wharf-side warehouses, urban safe-houses, on ships and inside submarines, our company’s founder, Randy Hetrick, and his SEAL teammates searched for ways to stay in peak condition while stashed away on missions.

This is when Hetrick got the idea to develop a prototype of the TRX Suspension Trainer. The original TRX was a training harness — a few lengths of parachute webbing hand-stitched together by boat repair tools.

Extensive R&D
Almost immediately, Hetrick and his teammates put the TRX to use and created the first dozen exercises. In the weeks and months that followed, the breadth of original bodyweight exercises grew and the harness evolved, gradually becoming the complete field training system being offered today. Tested by the military to attain operation readiness in the field, the TRX achieved success early on prompting Hetrick to launch a company around the product.

The Complete Training System
Today, Fitness Anywhere LLC is changing the way athletes of all abilities, fitness professionals around the country, and the U.S. military perform by offering an array of bodyweight-based training products, education and specialized training programs. The newest addition to the TRX family is the TRX Rip Trainer. While the TRX Suspension Trainer is a training tool that builds total body stability and strength by leveraging the user’s bodyweight through hundreds of functional exercises, the TRX Rip Trainer develops explosive power and rotational movements. By using the TRX Rip Trainer, individuals can strengthen the muscles around the spinal cord, making them more stable and less likely to be easily injured. All product lines include comprehensive training programs for athletes of all levels to elevate their fitness level.

This month’s TRX TV is all about Balanced Power, teaching you how to use your hips to safely and effectively generate the power needed for explosive movement. In the Training Tip each week, you learn a progressive approach to performing the sandbag clean, but there are other lifts you can perform using this same approach to the movement.

In today’s blog post, strength coach and creator of the Ultimate Sandbag Josh Henkin and performance coach Troy Anderson show us drills on the TRX Suspension Trainer that prepare clients for power lifting with kettlebells.

“As coaches, we are seeing more and more people coming to improve their fitness that have not trained in some time or suffer from chronic aches, pains and sometimes injuries,” says Josh. “The TRX Suspension Trainer can help us get these people to perform effective kettlebell training faster as a means of reinforcing good movement patterns and teaching how to active the ‘RIGHT’ muscles.”

It’s All About the Hips;
Learning how to lift with the hips is one of the best solutions for low back pain prevention and treatment. This means understanding how to integrate the hamstrings, glutes and low back in one synergistic movement. In order to teach “functional” movement patterns, you sometimes have to simplify your overall goal into patterns that are more stable and allow you to focus on the integration of the body. That is where the TRX Hip Press can have important application to ballistic kettlebell lifts such as swings, cleans and snatches. “Becoming efficient in this drill will go a long way in reducing any type of back strain one can experience,” says Josh.

“Active Your Core.”
According to Josh, this is one of the most misused but well intended cues coaches try to use with their clients. In many circumstances, it is not actually movement you want the core to perform but to resist movement to provide stability to the spine. This philosophy has resulted in various plank exercises to become a standard in performance and wellness programs. However, increasing the demand of the drill is necessary for long term progress. Learning how to create the “bracing” mechanism that is critical for more advanced drills such as the Renegade Row can be taught with less complex drills such as the TRX Body Saw.

Shoulder Ready
“The king of kettlebell movements may be the kettlebell snatch,” says Josh. While the snatch is a tremendous strength and conditioning exercise, it may be challenging for some because of the range of motion of the shoulder, proper use of the hips and absorbing the force of the kettlebell overhead. Learning to properly integrate the hips and shoulders can teach the foundational principles of performing the snatch well. Finding out how to utilize the shoulder stabilizers in absorbing the kettlebell can allow the lifter to gain the benefits of the kettlebell snatch while minimizing the risk of causing trauma to the shoulder.
