College professors often insist that a general rule of thumb is that for every hour a student is in class they should spend two hours outside it preparing. If a student has a full courseload of 12 credit hours, they should expect to spend 24 hours outside of class studying. By all accounts college students spend far less than that. The National Survey of Student Enagagement has found that only about 13 percent of freshmen meet this minimal bar.

The graph below is from the American Time Use Survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This graph shows the average time use of full-time college students between 2003 and 2007. They spent an average of 3.2 hours Monday-Friday on all educational activities, including attending class. That’s a meager 16 hours per work week, and would mean a full-time student enrolled in 12 credit hours would need to spend 20 more hours on Saturday and Sunday to meet the 2:1 ratio goal. 20 hours over two weekend days isn’t impossible, but it’s also not realistic. Full-time American college and university students spend .7 hours more per day doing leisure and sport activities than they do educational ones. Students work almost as much as they study
