Big Commerce, a company that provides e-commerce software to online retailers and merchants, has raised $15 Million in Series A funding from General Catalyst Partners. Launched in 2009, Big Commerce provides a comprehensive SaaS for retailers and merchants to manage e-commerce online. Big Commerce helps small businesses power anything and everything related to an online storefront from search to inventory to online payments to marketing and SEO. And the price for the software is affordable for small businesses, with basic plans starting at $25 per month.
Features include multi-channel retailing, automated email marketing, inventory control, an online storefront, and more. The company, which has 20,000 clients and is profitable, also launched an application for merchants to list inventory on Facebook. Big Commerce has $200 million in total transactions via its SaaS and is adding 1,000 clients per month. The new funding would be used to expand the company’s headcount in Sydney and Austin, Texas operations, sales and marketing initiatives and more.
Why this site?
I am currently using Big Commerce to build a new e-commerce store. I've done this twice previously, once with a custom built store, and once by adding RomanCart to an html store I had built. Both were sufficiently good enough to generate thousands of dollars of revenue, neither were perfect. As I navigate and learn to use this site, it is the perfect opportunity for me to review and record my thoughts and experiences.
Short Summary
Essentially, if you are looking for an e-commerce store that you can set up straight away, this is an awesome (but not quite perfect) solution. We'll share our experiences as we get to grips with it ourselves, and compare it other solutions we have used. If you want a quick overall assessment of it's quality, I'd say 4 1/2 out of five - but from the attitude of the staff and the constant innovation that is taking place I have a feeling it is going to get a lot, lot better. Having said there are a couple of issues - most noticably with the newsletter! (UPDATE - There is a workaround for this - see Newsletter.)
Putting my money where my mouth is
"Big Commerce ECommerce - Online Shopping Mall is easily Setup with Big Commerce which also offers an Affiliate Programs where you can make residual monthly income"
I've said this is a awesome (but not perfect) solution. As I said, I chose to use this solution after an extensive review of different services and checking out the reviews of other websites, and also after having used different solutions. I am personally of the opinion that this is the best option available at the moment for someone looking for a complete solution (as opposed to just adding checkout functionality!)
Is it for you? How to find out!
A really good idea to see what other current customers think about the site it to actually head over to Big Commerce and visit the support portal. Then you will get an idea of how current customers feel about the site and whether any current issues would affect what you need from the site.
